When a cold steam generator and engine are started up, condensed steam or water will find its way into the space above the piston. Vents are needed to get rid of this water.
The vent uses a small poppet valve to release or seal. The poppet valve was chosen because of its excellent sealing qualities. The seat for the poppet valve is made by applying stellite overlay or hard surfacing material. The valve is made by building up the head from hard surfacing material. This combination provides a valve and seat with stellite on the sealing contact surfaces. The stellite withstands the steam exposure in excellent fashion.
This vent design is easy to build with machine tools and will give years
of service.
